Queens Lunar New Year Parade
Saturday, February 17


You know it's going to be a great new (lunar) year when you kick it off simultaneously with (A) a parade and (B) free Korean comfort food.  March with KALAGNY at the Queens Lunar New Year Parade on Saturday, February 17 and start off the new year with your best foot forward!

Parade lineup begins at 10:30 a.m. at Union and 37th Avenue (map) and the route will follow Sanford Avenue, Main Street and 39th Avenue. The KALAGNY group will begin walking at around 11:30 a.m. and complete the parade route in about an hour.  The Korean American Association of Queens (KAAQ) has arranged for KumGangSan to offer complimentary dduk-guk (떡국) to parade-goers at lunchtime.  Along with the parade, Korean cultural performances will take place at KumGangSan until 3:00 p.m.

This year's parade was jointly organized by KAAQ and the Flushing Chinese Business Association, and members of both the Korean and Chinese communities will participate.  Come on down and party like it's 4697!

EB-5 and Foreign Investments in the U.S.:  Inbound Real Estate and Tax Considerations

AABANY's Real Estate, Tax, Solo and Small Firm, Immigration and Asia Practice Committees have organized a panel discussion on real estate and tax considerations in EB-5 visa applications.  AABANY, KALAGNY and our co-hosts, Venable LLP and MacGregor Abstract, will host the CLE at the offices of Baker Tilly Virchow Krause, LLP (1 Penn Plaza, 30th Floor, Manhattan) on February 21 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.  Please see the flyer (pdf) for information on the panel speakers.

Don't Sign Just Yet:  Due Diligence and Residential Real Estate Contracts

Speakers from MacGregor Abstract, Cohen & Frankel LLP and Seiden Schein LLP will discuss aspects of due diligence when entering into residential real estate contracts.  On February 27, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., KALAGNY, AABANY's Real Estate and Solo and Small Firm Committees and MacGregor Abstract are co-hosting this CLE with Flushing Bank at its 99 Park Avenue office in Manhattan.  Please see this flyer (pdf) for more information on the panel.

Panel: Impact of Cannabis on Health and Wellness and Overview of NY Medical Marijuana Law

KALAGNY and the Asian Cannabis Roundtable are co-sponsoring a panel discussion of the impact of cannabis on health and wellness, together with an overview of the New York Medical Marijuana Law.  The panelists - Dr. Bernie Lee, Metropolitan Jewish Hospice and Palliative Care; Sang Choi, R.Ph., Etain Health; and Kristin Jordan, Newman Ferrara LLP - will bring to the discussion extensive expertise in both the medical and legal aspects of the questions surrounding medical marijuana laws.  More information on the panelists can be found in this flyer (pdf).  Event is free for dues-paid KALAGNY members and $20 for non-members.

CLE:  Solo and Small Law Firm Transactions:  Tax Pitfalls and Taxpayer Resources

Tuesday, March 6 (Ncredit: 1.0 professional practice)

Please join us for a CLE presentation on the potential tax pitfalls in solo and small law firm transactions and the taxpayer resources that can provide assistance.  The speakers will be Margaret T. Ling of MacGregor Abstract and KALAGNY members Eunkyong Choi of the NYC Office of the Taxpayer Advocate and Sung Hwang, a partner in Venable LLP's Tax and Wealth Planning practice. 

The CLE will take place at Flushing Bank, 61-14 Springfield Boulevard, Bayside on Tuesday, March 6 from 5:30-8:30 p.m.  A portion of the evening will be reserved for networking with other attendees and a light buffet will be provided.  This event is co-sponsored by Flushing Bank, AABANY's Solo & Small Firm Committee and Real Estate Committee, MacGregor Abstract and Venable LLP.

NAPABA 2018 NE Regional Conference:  Call for Submissions

Deadline for submission of general information:  February 12

The National Asian Pacific American Bar Association (NAPABA) is seeking submissions for panel presentations at its 2018 Northeast Regional Conference, which will take place on June 8-10, 2018 at the Mohegan Sun Resort in Uncasville, CT.   Information regarding proposed programs must be submitted via this online form no later than February 12, 2018; please note that only general information is required at this stage.
