CONGRATULATORY ANNOUNCEMENT


KALAGNY Congratulates Justice Doris Ling-Cohan

 


Justice Doris Ling-Cohan was recently appointed to the Appellate Term, First Department, and is the first female APA to be appointed to any appellate bench in New York State.

Justice Doris Ling-Cohan was the first woman of Asian descent to be elected to the Supreme Court in New York State (2002). She began her judicial career when elected to New York City Civil Court (2nd Municipal Court District) in 1995, marking the first time that the downtown/Chinatown community elected a person of Asian descent in that local district to public office, other than school board. In 2005, she became the first trial judge in New York State and third trial judge in the country to decide in favor of Marriage Equality in Hernandez v Robles. Justice Ling-Cohan received a B.A. summa cum laude in psychology from Brooklyn College in 1976 and J.D. from New York University School of Law in 1979. She is married to Marc Cohan and the mother of a daughter, of Korean descent.
