50th Anniversary Celebration of the 1965 Immigration and Naturalization Act - January 27, 2016


*Note: the event is on January 27, not January 26, as suggested in a prior announcement.


We invite you to a reception celebrating the 50th Anniversary of the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1965.  Members of the Bench and other public officials will give personal accounts of their or their families' immigration to the United States.  Our honored guests include the following:

Join KALAGNY for a Brown Bag Seminar Entitled “United Nations and the Future of the Korean Peninsula” - Friday, January 29, 2016 from Noon to 4 PM


KALAGNY presents an exclusive presentation and discussion with Ambassador Hahn Choong-Hee, Deputy Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations in New York, and Chair of the 47th Session of the United Nation Commission on Trade Law ("Uncitral").  We will visit the beautiful Permanent Mission to the Republic of Korea to the United Nations.  Read about the Permanent Mission here, and see the schedule and additional program information here.  The current Ambassador and Permanent Representative of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations in New York, is Ambassador Oh Joon, who is KALAGNY's 2015 Gala Keynote Speaker and Honoree.  


Ambassador Hahn will engage us with his stories of working as a diplomat and with the United Nations, the state of Korea today and its potential reunification, and human rights issues in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (“North Korea”). The program will include an interactive dialogue and a tour of the Permanent Mission, which is at 335 East 45th Street, New York, NY 10017.  Please RSVP here, space is limited and priority will be given to dues paid members. Ambassador Hahn is a career diplomat, and has held numerous positions within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the Republic of Korea.  His areas of expertise include North Korean nuclear affairs, nuclear non-proliferation, regional architecture surrounding the Korean Peninsula and Northeast Asia, North American, European and African affairs, as well as public diplomacy.  Ambassador Hahn received an M.A. in international relations from the University of Pennsylvania, a B.A. in French from Seoul National University and studied at University of Paris I (Pantheon-Sorbonne) in its training program. To read more about Ambassador Hahn’s illustrious career, please click here.  


Meet yKan Members at a Makgeolli Making Event: January 26, 2016


KALAGNY is holding a joint event with the young Korean American Network ("yKAN"), over a Makgeolli (rice-wine) making workshop.  The event will be at 6:30 PM on January 26, 2016, at NY DokSeoSil, located at 312 5th Avenue, in Manhattan, on the 5th Floor.   yKan is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, non-partisan organization of 1.5 and 2nd generation Korean-Americans who strive for the advancement of all Korean-Americans in mainstream American society.  Its mission is to elevate Korean-American professionals by fostering educational programs, community service, and networking opportunities.  


Instruction will be led by Jisung Chun, who has studied intermediate Korean drink brewing, as well as beer, mead, cider brewing at Susubori Academy (one of the most renowned brewing institutions in Korea).  An admission fee of $62.49 will cover the cost of instruction, materials, pajeon, and takju or makgeolli for drinking.  A limited supply of early bird tickets are available at a discounted price.  Please join KALAGNY, yKan, and Ms. Chun by registering here. 


Honoring the Survivors & Breaking News: Korea and Japan Settle Dispute Over Comfort Women Issue

Breaking News: Korea and Japan have resolved their dispute over the "Comfort Women" issue.   As part of the resolution, Japan offered a public apology and a one-billion yen ($8.3 million) compensation to Korean women who were forced to work in Japanese brothels during WWII.  Read more here and here.  


KALAGNY has played an integral part in the ongoing open discussion about this atrocity faced by the "Comfort Women." We hope to educate our members and our community  so as to prevent any like incidents from arising in the future.
