In celebration of AAPI Heritage Month, on May 20, 2021, KALAGNY hosted a panel featuring Thomas S. Kim, Chief Legal Officer & Company Secretary of Thomson Reuters, Adeline Park, Vice President & General Counsel of PetVet Care Centers, and Michael Rhee, Vice President & General Counsel of The Durst Organization.  The event, which was also sponsored by the New York State Bar Association, Business Law Section, was moderated by KALAGNY’s own Board Member and In-House Committee Chair, Irene Han, the Executive Director and Assistant General Counsel at JPMorgan Chase.

    On March 25, KALAGNY's Women's Committee held a panel featuring four Asian American female attorneys who shared stories about what they do and how they got there. They also spoke about how things have changed throughout their careers and if the landscape looks like Asian American female attorneys.       KALAGNY Joins with Other National KABAS in Statement Against Revisionist "Comfort Women" Article by Harvard Law School

      KALAGNY has joined with other national KABAs in denouncing an upcoming article to be published in Harvard Law School’s International Review of Law and Economics arguing that Korean “comfort women” during World War II were consenting prostitutes and willing participants in a contractual relationship rather than sex slaves.

      KALAGNY Congratulates Brian Lee on His Historic Promotion to Executive ADA in Nassau County

      KALAGNY recently recognized Brian Lee with a congratulatory plaque for being promoted as the first Korean-American executive level Assistant District Attorney in New York State history. Brian Lee was recently elevated by Nassau County District Attorney, Madeline Singas, to become Deputy Executive Assistant District Attorney overseeing the General Litigation Division, which manages the largest sector of cases and staff in the office. Brian Lee is a veteran prosecutor with over 25 years of experience, both in the Queens County District Attorney's Office and in the Nassau County District Attorney's Office, where he has previously served as Chief of the District Court Trial Bureau and the Chief of the County Court Trial Bureau. Brian Lee has a diverse background as a prosecutor in numerous roles, including trying numerous high-profile felonies and homicides, as an appellate ADA, and 14 years in various supervisory roles, and he has been devoted to mentoring younger attorneys. Congratulations Brian!

      KALAGNY Resume Review and Interview Workshop (01/21/2021)

      4th Annual Veterans & Military Networking Event

      Effective Writing for Litigators Workshop (11/12/2020)

A virtual award ceremony was held on December 10 for the awardees and their family members. KALAGNY would like to thank all who applied for this scholarship.       KALAGNY Awarded Community Contribution Award by KACE

      KALAGNY was awarded the Community Contribution Award by Korean American Civic Empowerment (KACE) in recognition of the pro bono services that KALAGNY and KACE provided to nearly 1,000 community members needing legal assistance during the pandemic through the COVID-19 Pro Bono Task Force.

      KALAGNY President, Gene Kang, received the award on behalf of KALAGNYduring KACE's annual gala, which was held virtually this year on December 4. We would like to thank all those that volunteered on the task force, including Youngsoo Choi, Suyon Yi, William Lee, Jaejin Park, and Do Hee Jeong. 

      We look forward to continuing to work with KACE to serve the Korean-American community.

      KALAGNY's Prosecutors Committee Virtual Mixer (09/20/2020)

      The KALAGNY Prosecutors Committee held a virtual mixer last night, which featured Brian Lee, Chief of the County Court Trial Bureau at the Nassau County District Attorney's Office.

      KALAGNY WEBINAR: How to Become a Rainmaker

      On Wednesday, July 22, KALAGNY held a "Becoming a Rainmaker" Webinar, which featured a panel of veteran attorneys who spoke about their career paths and their approaches to business development.

      KALAGNY has joined with a coalition of affinity bar associations and groups to raise and donate $10,000 to local minority-owned restaurants in New York and New Jersey so that they can provide meals to frontline healthcare workers.

      KALAGNY is proud to support the KACF COVID-19 Community Action Fund through its donation of $10,000. KACF has already distributed relief grants totaling $60,000 to seven nonprofit organizations. The COVID-19 Community Action Fund aims to help the most vulnerable in the Korean-American community affected by the COVID-19 pandemic, including by supporting efforts to deliver food to low-income individuals and families, provide emergency shelter services for domestic violence victims, and offering medical hotline and telemedicine consultations.

      As many law firms and organizations are issuing legal bulletins related to COVID-19, we wish to make this information more accessible to Korean-American businesses that may have English-language difficulties or may not be aware of them at all by posting Korean-translated versions online with the promotional and marketing assistance of other Korean-American organizations in the area.

      KALAGNY has partnered with KACE (Korean American Civic Empowerment) and the Korean American Sanctuary Churches Network to assist those economically impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic by offering remote pro bono legal consultations in connection with the CARES Act and other legal issues.

      Over the past several weeks, our volunteers have assisted over 450 people that have been affected by the Coronavirus. There is a continuing need for volunteers to field 2-hour shifts on the “hotline”, which is open 7 days a week, from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m, and 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. As many of those seeking assistance have difficulty with English, there is a particular need for volunteers with proficiency in Korean. Training is also available to those that are interested.

      On Wednesday, April 22, 2020, KALAGNY's Prosecutors Committee held a virtual committee meeting and roundtable discussion with Acting Brooklyn Supreme Court Justice Danny K. Chun regarding his career as a Manhattan prosecutor, his rise to judgeship, and his insights regarding networking.

      2019-2020 MENTORSHIP PROGRAM KICK-OFF RECEPTION (11/21/2019)

      On November 21, 2019, KALAGNY held its annual Mentorship Program Kick-Off Reception at Kobre & Kim.This year, over fifty experienced attorneys and judges have volunteered to serve as mentors while over one hundred young attorneys and law students signed up as mentees. KALAGNY member and AABANY President, Brian Song, gave remarks about the importance of mentorship, and what's expected of both mentors and mentees to create a working relationship. A huge shout out to Julie Cho and John Kim for putting together a great event, thank you Kobre & Kim for hosting, and thank you to all the mentors for guiding the next generation of attorneys.

      WOMEN IN LITIGATION PANEL (11/11/2019)

      On Thursday, November 7, 2019, KALAGNY's Women’s Committee and Litigation Committee presented the “Women in Litigation” panel. A team of superstar panelists -- Una Dean, Susan Shin, Judge Jennifer Choe-Groves, Maria Park, and moderator Yoojin DeNiro -- shared their experience practicing law as a female, Asian-American attorney and practice tips on succeeding in law firms, government, and the judiciary.       On November 14th, 2019, KALAGNY held its Third Annual Veterans and Military Networking Event at Debevoise & Plimpton. Commander David Lee, Staff Judge Advocate for the Naval Special Warfare Command, spoke about his eighteen years of public service and his experiences as an Asian American in the military. To close out the event, KALAGNY President, Gene Kang, presented a donation to Coco Culhane, founder and executive director of the Veterans Advocacy Project. The Veterans Advocacy Project is an organization that provides free legal services to low-income veterans and their families. KALAGNY would like to thank the co-sponsors of this event including Jasmine Ball and her firm Debevoise & Plimpton, AABANY and their Military and Veterans Committee, and SABANY. And a great job by KALAGNY Secretary, Jimmy Kang, as well as Dong Joo Lee, for organizing the event. 


      On November 6, 2019, KALAGNY held its Third Annual Writing Workshop for Litigators at Fordham Law School. Judge Denny Chin, Professor Ted Neustadt, and AUSA Won Shin, spoke to lawyers and law students about how to become more effective legal writers. They shared tips on how to approach any given writing assignment by outlining, organizing, and mastering the basics, as well as stressing the importance of editing and rewriting to achieve a level of "clarity." Thank you to our panelists, great job by Christopher Bae and Andrew Kim for organizing the event, and shout out to our co-sponsors @aabany and NYCLA Asia Practice Committee for their support.

      2019 KOREA DAY PARADE (10/05/2019)


      On Tuesday, October 1, KALAGNY launched its first pro bono clinic in New Jersey in partnership with the Korean Community Center (KCC) located in Tenafly, New Jersey. The event was attended by over ten volunteer attorneys that provided free legal consultations to nearly fifteen people from the community. The inaugural event was organized by Gene Kang (President), Suyon Yi (Pro Bono Clinic - Chair, Board Member), Lena Chun (Former KALAGNY President), and John Kim (Board Member). Thank you to all that attended to support and volunteer. A special thanks to Eunju Ryu (CEO - KCC) and the KCC staff for their invaluable support, and to Jin Sung Kim (Undersheriff - Bergen County Sheriff's Office) for attending and providing congratulatory remarks.

      On Thursday, July 11, KALAGNY, along with KAAGNY and AABANY, hosted the robing ceremony for the Honorable Michael H. Park, the first Korean-American judge appointed to the Second Circuit, held at the Museum of Korean American Heritage.
