KALAGNY's 2019-2020 Mentorship Program

The Korean American Lawyers Association of Greater New York ("KALAGNY") is pleased to announce its 2019-2020 KALAGNY Mentorship Program. This will be the eleventh annual edition of this program, and it has become a model for several similar programs around the United States.

2019-2020 Mentorship Program Kick-Off Reception

KALAGNY held its annual Mentorship Program Kick-Off Reception at Kobre & Kim on November 21, 2019. This year, over fifty experienced attorneys and judges volunteered to serve as mentors while over one hundred young attorneys and law students registered as mentees. KALAGNY member and AABANY President, Brian Song, gave remarks regarding the importance of mentorship as well as keys to fostering a productive mentorship relationship.

We thank Julie Cho and John Kim, our Mentorship Program Co-Chairs, for all their efforts with preparing this year's program. We also thank Kobre & Kim for graciously hosting our annual reception as well as all our mentors for devoting their time and participating this year.

Our Network

The Mentorship Program has steadily grown each year since its inception, from about 55 participants in 2009-2010 to over 200 participants today.  Our mentors include judges, prosecutors, in-house attorneys, public interest attorneys, lawyers from large, medium and small firms and solo practitioners.  Our mentees have included law students from every law school in the greater New York area and young attorneys in a variety of practices.

Our Philosophy and Approach

Our program is designed to provide law students and new attorneys access to a broad network of attorneys who have volunteered their time to share their wisdom and insight into the day to day practice of law and broader career issues and goals.

The program includes both formal and informal events throughout the year to foster the mentoring relationship and to help participants get to know one another. These include a formal reception, a KALAGNY-subsidized dinner for each group, a picnic, and a resume and interviewing workshop. We also strongly encourage our mentors and mentees to set up their own meetings and to stay in touch by email, telephone, and in person.
